Resort

Greece,
Mykonos

Introduction

Located in the heart of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, Mykonos and its rocky landscape is one of Greece's most popular destinations. Despite the enduring meltemi (a dry wind from the north), the island's pristine beaches and lively whitewashed towns have attracted eclectic groups from Jackie Onassis in the 1960s, to a swinging, gay crowd in the 1980s. Wealthy Greeks, realising they were missing out, have since contributed to the island's gentrification.

Essentials

  1. Late breakfast, late lunch and late dinner are de rigueur.
  2. Don’t overpack, you’ll spend most of your time in your bathing suit.
  3. Forget motorcycles, and rent a car, a much safer option.
  4. Be prepared for creative driving from everyone else.
  5. Cruise-ship crowds take over towns in the afternoon.
