Switzerland,
Zürich

Introduction

Public transport runs smoothly, the view of the Alps from the lake is compelling, nights out are fun and the standard of living remains resolutely high (even for employees of Swiss banks). Web giant Google liked the city so much, it set up its European HQ here following other large organisations such as GM Europe and Fifa. Having said that, it's a good idea to get out of town on a Sunday when shops and many bars close for the day.

Essentials

  1. Don't be late. Showing up five minutes early is the rule.
  2. Say “merci” instead of “danke schön”
  3. Impress locals by saying “Züri” instead of “Zürich”
  4. Install the ZVV application on your iPhone or Android based phone. The real-time public transport timetable makes travelling as precise as a Swiss watch.
  5. Don't drive. The city is full of one-way streets.
