23 July 2011

1. Music: Global

-Washed Out, 'Within and Without'

Atlanta songwriter-producer Ernest Greene, better known under the alias Washed Out, took two years to deliver his highly anticipated debut album, distilling new music track by track with the same nonchalance as his chillwave bedroom tunes. Early-hour fans and new enthusiasts will rejoice in the long-form of the same Southern aural fuzz, equally appropriate for summer drives, cocktail hour and lovemaking.

‘Within and Without’ is available now.

2. Roof Garden: London

-Selfridges boating lake

This weekend the rooftop of London’s department store Selfridges will be flooded to create a 400 sq m boating lake complete with a waterfall. Visitors to the roof will be able to get a rowing boat to the crystal bar for cocktails by the Experimental Cocktail Club and eat dishes created by food “architects” Bompas & Parr. Designed by Studio Toogood, the impressive space is inspired by the 1905 Gondola Banquet when the Savoy Hotel courtyard was flooded for a feast and is only the second time since the Second World War that Selfridges has opened its rooftop to the public.

Selfridges Rooftop, Main door, 400 Oxford Street, London. Until Sunday 24 March. Friday – Saturday 12.00-20.00 (Sunday until 17.00, last entry 16.00).

3. Film: USA

-Sarah's Key

An American journalist working on a story about the Vel d’Hiv arrests of Jewish families in Paris in 1942 discovers she shares a connection with a 10-year-old Jewish girl Sarah and decides to find out the destiny of the girl and her family. Based on Tatiana De Rosnay’s bestseller, Sarah’s Key is an elegantly shot and wonderfully acted Holocaust drama about the lives of four generations struggling for survival. Directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner.

Sarah’s Key is showing at selected cinemas across the US

4. Urban Beach: Madrid

-Madrid Rio Café Playa

If you’re strolling around southeast Madrid this weekend, don’t be surprised if you bump into shirtless locals playing paddle tennis in the Arganzuela district. Filled with kiosks and beach loungers, Spain’s capital is celebrating the inauguration of the Madrid Río Café Playa, an urban beach where locals go to soak up the summer sun. The space has chiringuitos serving ice-cold cocktails and a restaurant and two ice-cream shops will be ready before the end of summer. In the meantime, visitors can rent tables and for their own fresh picnics (parasol included).

Madrid Río Café Playa, Arganzuela, Madrid. Open daily, 10.00 – 01.00 (until 02.00 at the weekend). All summer.
