Stamp of approval - Taiwan

Preface

For 35 years, Taiwan has enjoyed a uniquely uneasy and ambiguous status - a flourishing, free market democracy discreetly ignored by the rest of the free world. Since the US and its allies acknowledged the mainland communist government of the People's Republic of China in the 1970s, Taiwan has been in diplomatic limbo - a dynamic state timid of proclaiming its independence. Now, though, comes a sign of Taiwanese self-assertion - not in the realm of politics or the military, but in the world of postage stamps.
