We are seeking an experienced editor to lead on advertorial and branded content projects from our London headquarters in Marylebone. Monocle’s advertising and creative solutions team works with brands and agencies globally to develop creative and meaningful partnerships in print audio, film and online.

The ideal candidate will be able to write and commission clear, clever and ambitious briefs and work with a range of clients, from the world’s biggest luxury brands to start-ups in travel, aviation, fashion, technology and more.

We are looking for someone with a thorough understanding of the media industry, a natural ability to develop relationships with agencies and clients and both editorial and commercial credibility. In this role, you’ll work closely with all of Monocle’s editors and the art department to produce projects that span print, video, podcast, events and digital for Monocle magazine, Monocle 24 and Konfekt magazine. This is a busy role in a key area of growth for Monocle, working with an ambitious and passionate team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Write and respond to creative briefs from commercial clients and have a strategic understanding of our clients’ objectives
  • Work closely with art, editorial and the client to deliver multi-platform creative solutions
  • Commission freelance writers with clear briefs
  • Attend client meetings with the advertising team in pitch phase, during production and post partnership
  • Be the editorial champion of Monocle’s creative solutions by overseeing all of our partnerships from beginning to end
  • Build solid and trusting relationships with day-to-day clients and our team
  • Commit to suggesting a solution rather than passing on a problem
  • Write sharp, incisive copy that matches our Monocle house style
  • Be willing and able to travel where necessary, often at short notice
  • Contribute to the long-term growth of bespoke creative solutions at Monocle

Your experience/capabilities:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience writing, ideally, commercial and bespoke branded content for a publication or an agency
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and interpersonal
  • A strategic thinker with an ability to overcome obstacles and deliver solutions
  • Highly organised
  • Results-focused and comfortable meeting multiple and concurrent deadlines
  • Able to pick up house tone and style quickly and effectively

The brief and the role
To capitalise on a legacy of client work and media partnerships in Asia-Pacific, we are recruiting a business manager (sales & business development) to cultivate existing and new relationships in the region for both Monocle and Winkreative. The position is based in our Tokyo office, where a critical base of clients can be developed alongside outreach to the wider Asian market. Clients in state-making and government, place-making, technology, transport, design, fashion and retail, jewellery and watches to name a few, may be interested in creative services from the agency or media partnerships with the magazine. Therefore, a dynamic and considered approach is required to understand a client’s needs and present solutions through either one or both of our businesses. Brand strategy, creative direction and design and content creation on the Winkreative side; and media sales for print, digital and broadcast and, increasingly, bespoke content solutions on the Monocle side.

Areas of focus
• Active and responsive development of business leads across Asia (specifically but not limited to Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia at present) for creative services work for Winkreative and media sales and partnerships for Monocle. This includes research and analysis of potential targets, outreach, relationship development and client service.
• Prepare credentials, participate and contribute to prospective client meetings and calls with CEO, chairman and senior Winkreative and Monocle team; follow-up and proposal drafting through to contract negotiation and signing.
• Procurement and pitch development as required.
• Overall management of the pipeline for Asia with reporting to the associate publisher (Monocle) and managing director (Winkreative); participate and contribute to finance and forecast meetings across the group.

Requirements
• Proven sales success and solid commercial sensibility
• A hunger to chase and close new business and drive to increase the value of current customers
• Fluent in English; proficiency in Japanese (preferred) or other Asian language
• Excellent verbal and writing communication skills; an engaging communicator
• An active listener, creative, critical thinker and engaging communicator
• Ability to manage complex projects, multi-task, be proactive and handle uncertainty
• Flexibility on travel to London and within Asia
• 5+ years’ experience in the creative or media industry in a commercial, business development or sales capacity

Musts:
