Lastra a Signa
Florence, Italy
Tuscan tradition
This villa contains all the hallmarks of a Tuscan classic. Grand arched doors and tall narrow windows frame an exterior that sits serenely among the surrounding landscape. There’s terracotta tiling on the roof and an aia (or “farmyard”) that connects the various parts of the property. Inside you’ll find a vast, spacious floor plan and handsome wooden beams that reinforce the architectural tradition of the building. All of this combines to give the feeling of rich heritage, realised stylishly; an approach befitting of Tuscany as a location.
Beautiful grounds
When it comes to land, this property boasts a grand total of 11 hectares, one of which comprises a pristine fenced garden and generous swimming pool. There are also 1,350 olive trees, meaning that you have more than enough at your disposal should you wish to play a role in Tuscany’s world-leading contribution to the production of extra virgin olive oil. The aforementioned landscape that envelops the property contains the very best of the region’s geography: rolling hills and sprawling farmland create a patchwork of deep greens and sun-washed golds, among which this prestigious villa feel entirely at home.
Perfect placement
The villa is located in Lastra a Signa, a collection of villages situated 14km from Florence, and the city is reachable in less than 20 minutes thanks to a direct train. But Lastra, as locals call it, has a healthy cultural and gastronomic offering of its own. It accommodates a variety of museums and religious buildings, as well as vineyards that are responsible for some of the best wine in the Tuscan region. In late summer, Lastra plays host to the Antica Fiera di Lastra, an annual celebration that incorporates markets, exhibitions, live music and more.
Contemporary design
While traditional elements play a key role in the villa’s appearance, its interior offers a contemporary feel thanks to the presence of several smart design choices. Recently renovated by local architects, the space makes use of natural light and allows the pastoral beauty of the outdoors to maintain a presence inside too. Elsewhere, high ceilings serve as a recurring feature to provide a spaciousness that harmonises nicely with the lightness of the modernised rooms. A capacious living room has been stationed as the building’s central fulcrum. It serves not only as a natural meeting point and social hub, but also a platform through which to access the rest of the main building. In short, it’s big, bright and makes expert use of subtle flourishes and shapes that combine to ensure that this historic property is a comfortable fit for a contemporary lifestyle.
Smart with space
This is a villa that’s built for hosting. The main property includes six double bedrooms, as well as a small spa and loggia that serves as a perfect space for a summer dining room. What was once a barn has since been converted into a standalone annex that includes a kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom, should guests require a little more space or privacy.
