There are many disadvantages to running for high office without the backing of a party machine but if you run and win anyway, as recently inaugurated French president Emmanuel Macron did, then there are considerable advantages. Unhampered by the necessity of deference to party loyalties, Macron has enjoyed a free-ish hand in selecting his first cabinet.
