We are seeking an intern to assist our editorial team and to help with operations in our London office. Responsibilities will include general administrative duties associated with the day-to-day running of a busy office, alongside fact-checking, research and writing for our monthly print magazine, daily digital newsletters and various other products. Fluency in English is essential and other language skills are desirable, as is experience in fact-checking. This role is ideal for someone who is enthusiastic about starting their career in the media and who is also willing to take on general administrative tasks. This is a full-time position for a period of three months.

Monocle is seeking an experienced and talented digital sub editor to work at our London headquarters in Marylebone. This is a key position in a busy office for an international publication recognised for high standards in delivering the written word.

The role entails sub-editing stories for Monocle’s email newsletters, including The Monocle Minute and The Monocle Weekend Edition. You will also be responsible for updating and maintaining the newly launched Monocle Digital Editions, the online version of the magazine that features exclusive travel guides.

In addition, the successful applicant will work on layouts for the magazine and descriptions for radio programmes on Monocle 24.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has one to three years’ experience in a digital subbing role for a national newspaper or magazine.
  • Is comfortable using a content management system and has a working knowledge of InDesign.
  • Has a methodical and organised approach and can work quickly and accurately when faced with multiple deadlines.
  • Can write snappy headlines and engaging standfirsts.
  • Has supreme confidence in their grammar, spelling and fact-checking.
  • Can pick up house style and tone quickly.
  • Can communicate effectively and confidently with section editors, writers and other production departments, verbally and via email.

The position is available for an immediate start at Monocle’s offices in Marylebone, London. Please be advised that the hours for this role are 09.30 to 18.30 from Tuesday to Saturday. Salary is dependent on experience.

The Monocle Minute is our daily digest of opinion and global news, while The Monocle Weekend Editions on Saturday and Sunday are a look at the week in art, architecture, fashion and food. The successful candidate will generate ideas (and not just follow the anglosphere news agenda), commission and write polished copy, and be able to meet daily deadlines alongside our global network of correspondents, editors and art team (and update stories throughout the day too). Newsroom experience is essential, you will need to have digital skills and a second language is preferable. This role is full-time and based at Monocle’s London HQ.

This is a key position in the busy UK offices of a leading media brand and magazine that tells fresh stories from around the world in print, audio and online, as well as through our daily newsletters. We are recognised for our incisive coverage of current affairs, business, culture, design and more. The right candidate should have an appreciation of these and the brand.

About you

• At least three years’ experience in a similar role in digital, product or UI/UX design.
• A portfolio that highlights your experience in B2C digital-product offerings and a user-centred approach to problem solving.
• Strong skills in typography, iconography, composition, colour, composition and layout, and a keen eye for mobile-first/responsive web and newsletter design.
• Proficiency in using Sketch/Figma, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.
• Additional skills in After Effects, Keynote, Google Analytics, Hotjar, Excel, HTML and CSS.
• You believe in putting customers at the heart of your work and have excellent attention to detail.
• Strong interpersonal and team skills, empathy, willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams and an intrinsic motivation to deliver the highest-quality work.
• An ability to explain your thoughts on usability, engagement and business/user needs.

Responsibilities

• Lead design in the digital team to deliver inspiring, high-impact work that is driven by the needs of the business while keeping the customer in mind.
• Own delivery of features from concept to design and developer hand-off.
• Collaborate with developers to understand technical constraints and support them to ensure that final products match their design vision.
• Work closely with product owners to shape and deliver features.
• Communicate the underlying principles and rationale of designs, constructing compelling narratives that sell ideas to stakeholders and team members.
• Conceptualise experiences and realise them in detailed UIs with consideration of brand requirements.
• Iteratively design, test and refine concepts to help achieve product-market fit.
• Evolve the company’s design system in alignment with brand principles.
