Beauty connects all

The Amorepacific aesthetic is more than skin deep. The storied company behind some of South Korea’s biggest beauty brands, from Sulwhasoo to Innisfree, places internationally renowned art and inspiring architecture at its creative core.

Hall of beauty

The power of art is felt throughout Amorepacific. Located on the fifth floor of the company’s headquarters, “Infinite Bloom” by US media artist Leo Villareal fills the ceiling above the roof garden with elegant patterns of white light. The huge LED canvas, which contains nearly 20,000 nodes, pulses to create abstract forms using light – almost like a digital campfire – drawing people together to communicate on the subject of beauty.

Common Ground

“Beauty is forever,” says Suh Kyung-bae, chairman of Amorepacific Group. “By sharing culture and arts with the world, Amorepacific aims to create a common ground for beauty that inspires.” Visitors to Amorepacific are greeted by a giant outdoor sculpture in the shape of a compact mirror by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. “Overdeepening” is one of the many ancient and contemporary artworks in Amorepacific Museum of Art (APMA). Open to the public, APMA is used to turning heads: it celebrated its new opening in its headquarters during 2018 with a retrospective of Mexican media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Meanwhile earlier this year it opened US multimedia artist Barbara Kruger’s first solo show in Asia; FOREVER spans four decades of her work and runs to 29 December. Highlights include the public debut of her new artworks, which use the South Korean Hangul alphabet. The cosmetic giant’s love of art and creativity is felt all the way throughout the company.

Patron of the arts

The Amorepacific Museum of Art started in 1979 with the private collection of Amorepacific founder and former chairman Suh Sung-whan. Since then it has grown to become a hub for exhibitions, research, publications and programmes that support local communities. Indeed, the company’s new headquarters is a work of art in itself, designed by acclaimed UK architect David Chipperfield. As it has done for 70 years and counting, Amorepacific will continue to study and support the development of the thriving arts scene in South Korea, bringing internationally renowned artists to the country and exporting art around the world.
