Menswear / Beirut
Swim city
Despite the rather unsettled summer in Lebanon, it was business as usual at the iconic 1960s Sporting Club – or simply ‘Sporting’ if you’re a Gemayzeh resident.
The Sporting Club
The Sporting Club is one of Beirut’s unofficial monuments: a slab of concrete hugging the sea that overlooks the famous Pigeon Grotto, one of the preferred sites for postcard photographers from the days when Lebanon’s Riviera was in its heyday. Replete with its ageing locker rooms and plastic sun loungers, the 1960s beach club attracts a happy mix of old timers, sun worshippers and intellectuals who trade politics for a glass of arak under the sun. With no apparent plans to change its retro look, the Sporting is the perfect place for a nostalgic dive in the oriental waters of the Mediterranean and losing whole weekends with bottomless bottles of Bekaa Valley rosé.
