Monocle and AI
We want to ensure that we are always protecting the high-quality journalism that is central to Monocle’s success. Journalism based on our team’s integrity and accountability. So as artificial intelligence (AI) tools proliferate, these are the ways that we will – and will not – utilise the technology.
Reporting
Our writers do not generate content intended for publication – this includes initial drafts, outlines or summaries – using AI.
We do not use AI to assist in polishing copy for style or to supply alternative phrasing.
AI will never be used by our staff to replace original research, interviews or source-based reporting.
Images
We do not print or post AI-generated editorial images, whether photos or illustrations. And we do not use AI to alter editorial images beyond the boundaries of traditional retouching.
Research
We do allow contributors and staff to use AI as a tool for research or to help transcribe interviews, for example. But they are then responsible for checking its accuracy – the fundamental responsibilities of our journalists remain unchanged.
AI outputs can contain errors or reflect underlying biases. AI-generated research, insights or analysis must not be treated as authoritative and must always be verified against trusted sources.
Our team
Monocle’s AI policy will be regularly reviewed to keep pace with the technology’s evolving capabilities and ethical standards. We encourage employees to provide feedback on practical concerns and improvements, as well as the emergence of new tools that could possess great risks or benefits.
