Advantage Austria Kenya is a typical example. Housed in the Austrian embassy on Nairobi’s winding Limuru Road, the five-person office promotes trade relations between Austria and countries across East Africa. As business development manager, Mary Njung’e’s role involves coordinating with local representatives, organising tenders and ensuring that Austrian companies have a smooth experience in different markets. “We really focus on what expertise we have here and what areas Austrian companies are interested in,” she says. “This is mostly in sectors like health and renewable energy.”
Kenya is a key market, says Njung’e, due to its potential for growth versus GDP and a healthy approach to innovation, particularly in Nairobi’s “Silicon Savannah”. “Events like Africa Tech Summit are a really good opportunity to invite Austrian companies to connect with people who they can invest in,” she adds. Recent success stories include a partnership between an Austrian TVET company and Kenya’s Ministry of Education, as well as a joint venture between an Austrian chocolatier and a producer of camel milk in northern Kenya. “It’s never a dull moment,” says Njung’e.
