Haven of History

Views from the Tai O Heritage Hotel

Tai O Heritage Hotel is a refined hilltop retreat where cultural conservation and historic village life intersect.

Tai O Heritage Hotel X Monocle

Tai O is often described as the “Venice of the East” thanks to its seaside setting, many waterways and stilt houses. On Lantau’s west coast, it’s a two-hour hop from Central yet feels further removed. Above the settlement, on a small hill over aquamarine waters and green slopes, Tai O Heritage Hotel lets you step into the village’s history – and stay there.

The nine-room hotel occupies the Old Tai O Police Station, an architectural hybrid built in 1902 that could only exist in Hong Kong: colonial-era arches and symmetry paired with a Chinese pan-and-roll tiled roof and granite steps. The restoration is meticulous – you’ll still spot guard towers and former holding areas but the mood is relaxed rather than museum-like.

What makes the property more than a handsome conversion is its role as a neighbour. It is operated by the Hong Kong Heritage Conservation Foundation as a not-for-profit social enterprise. Surpluses are channelled into maintaining the site and supporting heritage efforts in Tai O. This commitment to conservation and community has earned it Hong Kong’s only UNESCO hotel award.

It’s this engagement that makes kicking back at Tai O Lookout, the hotel’s glass-roofed restaurant with a sea-facing perch, even more enjoyable. Here, you can raise a glass of their Mountain Begonia signature drink and take satisfaction that your stay supports the conservation of a living culture and the landmark building that watches over it.
