Affairs Morocco

2. Smart money

Morocco is filled with thriving sectors that are primed for inward investment, from automotive to pharmaceuticals. Underpinning them all is a progressive and benchmark-setting approach to technology and innovation that is creating global hubs for fintech, artificial intelligence and more.

Funding matters
Casablanca Finance City

Africa’s leading financial hub provides a strategic economic bridge for businesses across the rest of the continent, Europe and the Middle East.

Established by law in 2010, Casablanca Finance City (CFC) was conceived to position Casablanca internationally as an economic gateway into the rest of Africa. Qualifying companies are granted CFC status, which offers a streamlined set up process, tax incentives and help establishing industry connections. A community of 226 member companies, including Huawei, PWC and Schneider Electric, has taken up residence under CFC status, with more than 5,500 jobs created in the process. This concentration of multinationals and financial institutions has helped Morocco attract inward greenfield FDI projects and substantially outperform its GDP share.

CFC’s innovation stems not only from tax incentives but also digital ambition. The hub has also expanded into fintech, AI and sustainable finance, hosting the Africa50 fund to underwrite infrastructure projects across the continent. Through these measures, CFC offers a strategic model aimed squarely at positioning Morocco as a compelling investment gateway for global firms seeking a foothold in Africa and beyond.

Global links
CFC has developed 17 bilateral partnerships with other international financial centres, from Qatar Financial Centre to Frankfurt Main Finance.

The goods life
Tanger Med Port

World-class infrastructure is at the heart of Morocco’s offering, with the continent’s largest freight port providing a gateway to the world.

Opened in 2007 and stretching along Morocco’s northern coast, Tanger Med Port is the largest in both Africa and the Mediterranean region. The 3,000-hectare site hosts more than 1,400 companies and handles 40 per cent of the continent’s container traffic.

The port, which was extended in 2015, has boosted Morocco’s economic and logistics capacity, and is still growing fast: business volume increased 12.3 per cent in the year to 2024. And the infrastructure is complemented by Morocco’s unique resilience and stability in the region. The government struck a network of free-trade agreements to boost the port’s reach, so direct shipping services now run to 70 countries.

In the zone
The industrial zone around the port has also become a major economic driver and includes Tanger Automotive City, a free-trade zone for vehicle manufacturing.

Work and play
Rabat Gaming City

A new hub for game development, coding and training will encourage innovation and engage the next generation in Morocco and beyond.

With the announcement of plans for Rabat Gaming City, the Kingdom of Morocco committed MAD360m (€34.4m) to creating a specialised industry hub in the Moroccan capital. According to the minister for youth, culture and communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, plans will include “game production spaces for Moroccan studios and international investors, training and innovation centers, incubation facilities and an e-sports arena, as well as dedicated technological and logistical infrastructures”. The project was backed by French president Emmanuel Macron and the success of July’s Morocco Gaming Expo in Rabat has proven that the appetite exists for developing an industry bridge between Europe and the MENA region. Within Morocco, steps are being taken to ensure that the benefits of Rabat Gaming City are felt beyond the capital with mobility programmes and strategic educational partnerships being developed. “It reflects our inclusive vision, aimed at establishing a broad-based and accessible ecosystem across the nation,” says Bensaid.
