Thailand: A creative legacy
The passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother of Thailand in 2025 brought profound sorrow to the country. The embodiment of Thai elegance, charm and cultural heritage, she also advanced her vision to transform traditional skills into sustainable livelihoods and revitalise national folk arts.

Elegance on Display
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother of Thailand weaved creativity seamlessly into national development. Across seven decades, she became a champion of Thai culture. For state visits abroad, Her Majesty wore custom silk garments made using regional techniques. In doing so, she captivated the public and positioned Thai textiles within global haute couture. Designers in Europe took note; dormant Thai weaving communities were revived with a new generation.

Crafted for life
Her Majesty’s belief that beauty must sustain livelihoods crystallised in 1976 with the SUPPORT Foundation, which marks its 50th anniversary this year.
SUPPORT provided additional income to farming families during the off-season. Her Majesty encouraged master artisans to refine inherited techniques, from mudmee silk weaving to intricate basketry and silverwork. Revenues flowed back to communities, giving necessary income and reinforcing a cycle of dignity and economic resilience. Many of these masterpieces were created under the Queen Sirikit Institute, which grew from a SUPPORT training centre at Chitralada Villa in Bangkok. Today, they are exhibited at the Arts of the Kingdom Museum in Bang Pa-In, Ayutthaya.

Enduring threads
SUPPORT was created after witnessing hardship firsthand. As Her Majesty accompanied His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great on tours across the country, she met communities facing crop failure, debt and limited education. She asked locals about seasonal income gaps and the erosion of traditional skills, realising that refined knowledge could buffer agricultural uncertainty.

Beyond craft, Her Majesty’s charity extended to healthcare units, scholarships and welfare centres. She supported mobile medical teams and vocational training for women, emphasising self-reliance. Under her visionary guidance, education increased for remote provinces, creating a new generation of teachers and civil servants in rural communities. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother of Thailand had a rare ability to fuse empathy with action, using her refined eye to raise standards for others.
While Her Majesty’s interests ranged widely, the red thread in her accomplished life was aligning artistic excellence with social welfare. Thailand’s revitalised silk industry, thriving artisan networks and renowned craft institutions stand as durable evidence. Her legacy carries Thai creativity forward into a brighter, more secure future.
