Thuma: A guide to modern living

When crafting a modern living space, Thuma’s six interior design principles will provide a considered framework for success.

1.
Sanctuary

Your haven should reflect how you want to live your life
Home has a different meaning for everyone: a quiet haven, a restful space to recharge, or the heart of family life. For Thuma, it’s all of these and more. Founded in 2018 with the simple ambition of creating the perfect, minimal bed, the design brand has expanded into living room furniture and operates two US flagship stores with more planned. “A modern home is more than just a curated aesthetic,” says head of brand Alec Banks. “It’s a reflection of how we want to live. It should blend functionality with beauty and sustainability – and embrace meaningful design over excess.”

2.
Simplicity

To make a home feel like a sanctuary, simplicity is key
Thuma’s design philosophy is shaped by both Japanese minimalist traditions and the freedom of modern architecture. “Simplicity is the ultimate luxury,” says Banks. “We distil each piece down to what’s essential; nothing superfluous but nothing missing.” To recreate a modern, pared-back look at home, favour pieces with clean lines and curves. Opt for natural materials like solid wood, wool and linen to add warmth and texture. And remember simplicity extends to function. All Thuma furniture – from beds to shelving – can be assembled tool-free.

3.
Exploration

Get to know your space – and how objects interact
Creating a great home means getting to know the space – observing how the sunlight filters through the rooms or understanding where each object shines. Such slow design principles guide Thuma’s creative process, from conception to prototype. “Our in-house design team is central to everything that we create, allowing for a cohesive design language across collections,” says Banks. Creativity meets craftsmanship at the brand’s San Francisco HQ, where the in-house team experiments with new materials and processes to further refine original designs to the highest standards.

Elegance

From exquisite joinery to premium natural materials
Elegance is the element of modern living that is most coveted and yet hardest to achieve. Luckily, fashion offers a useful cue: it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it. At Thuma, that unspoken ethos translates into premium natural and upcycled materials with a unique tactile quality. It is also felt in the exquisite turns of its Japanese joinery – one of many clever features in the core collection, where craftsmanship and masterful engineering ensure items last for generations. Combine these ingredients with subdued silhouettes and thoughtful proportions, and you have the perfect recipe for a refined, modern home. Elegance is equally important in Thuma’s seamless service: personalised concierge appointments, either online or at the retail locations, provide tailored solutions for every style and space.

5.
Sustainability

Thoughtful features make for a mindful home
A well-designed home reflects the lives of the people within it. So a truly good and responsible home should be filled with objects made from responsibly sourced materials that respect the environment and future generations. Start by knowing the origin of the materials. Thuma’s core products are made from repurposed rubberwood sourced close to artisans and factories that it collaborates with. By doing so, the brand gives a second life to trees that have reached the end of their latex-producing cycles. Sustainability shows up in less obvious places too. Thuma produces eco-friendly materials and has eliminated the need for styrofoam in its packaging. Together with a lifetime warranty on all furniture and ambitious eco certifications, Thuma’s lineup offers ultimate peace of mind.

6.
Hospitality

Prioritise sociability as much as aesthetics
Charles Eames once said that “the role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host, anticipating the needs of his guests.” More literally, the great US designer might also have meant that a modern home should be just as suited to hosting friends as it is to unwinding alone. While every part of the Thuma experience is rooted in great hospitality, it is expressed most clearly in the brand’s retail offering. With a café and concierge desk, the New York and San Francisco flagships offer premium-level service and amenities like those at a top hotel. It also explains why the brand recently ventured beyond the bedroom. “The living room is the heart of the home,” says Banks. “It’s a place to connect and entertain.” It’s also proof that if you design with hosting in mind, a home can be made anywhere when the right people are in it.

With Thuma’s six design principles in mind, what will your home look like?
