Art in motion
At the heart of iGA Istanbul Airport’s bustling departures area, a new artwork by Hayri Karay offers something unexpected: a reason to slow down. Rising more than 37.7 metres above the concourse, the two-part kinetic sculpture is a point of engagement in the terminal’s flow. Crafted from mirrored steel, the untitled artwork’s reflective surfaces respond to passersby and shifting light to create ever-changing views. “It is about a few seconds of contact that leave a lasting association in the mind,” says Karay. No two encounters will be the same, encouraging travellers to pause and look again during every visit.

Creative uplift
Karay’s concept was selected from more than 170 proposals in the iGA ART Art Projects Contest, a biennial open call that platforms contemporary Turkish art. The initiative supports artists in realising ambitious, large-scale projects while introducing international audiences to Türkiye’s wealth of creativity. Karay draws on the layered histories of Anatolia to translate cultural memory into a language of movement and light. “Standing as a tribute to the centenary of the Republic of Türkiye, it carries a deep sense of heritage without feeling heavy,” says iGA Istanbul Airport CEO Selahattin Bilgen. “Instead, it looks forward.”

A place of discovery
With these art commissions, iGA Istanbul Airport is redefining the role of a modern airport. More than just a global transit hub, it becomes a space where culture is woven into every movement. Art operates as both anchor and invitation, creating moments of reflection within the constant flow of travel. “We don’t see art as an add-on for effect, but as an integral part of the passenger’s journey,” says Bilgen. “iGA ART turns a global transit hub into a living centre of creativity.” For even the most weary travellers, iGA Istanbul Airport is a place of discovery before takeoff, where the journey becomes as impactful as the destination.
