Two perspectives from Europe’s peripheries. The Finnish entry questions the political response to the challenges thrown up by mass migration, while Romania’s cranked-up offering questions architecture’s role in providing freedom of movement.

Chapter 3

Australia and Spain

These pavilions consider the symbolism of manmade structures that are ubiquitous across the landscapes of Australia and Spain, respectively. For Australia, that’s the swimming pool. For Spain, it’s a less-desirable architectural staple: the abandoned construction sites that litter the country in the wake of the financial crisis.
