How do you design a memorial or a monument? And who gets to decide what should be commemorated? The National Mall in Washington DC is lined with permanent structures that remember US presidents and major historical conflicts. Key locations along the iconic strip have been given over to six temporary memorials as part of an exhibition called ‘Beyond Granite: Pulling Together’.

The facade of St Paul’s Cathedral in London will become a stage for US dance company Bandaloop. For more than three decades, it has incorporated climbing technology into its chorepgraphy, with performances taking place on structures, skyscrapers and at Unesco heritage sites. The company’s latest work, ‘Resurgam’, is a co-commission between the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival and the City of London.
