Trinidad and Tobago’s coat of arms contains a selection of national treasures, including hummingbirds and a palm tree. But at its centre lies something increasingly viewed as problematic: explorer Christopher Columbus’s three ships – the ‘Pinta’, the ‘Niña’ and the ‘Santa Maria’. Now the island is redrawing its coat of arms, replacing references to European colonisation with a steel drum. But is this removal just erasing the lessons of history?
