Why is Germany cooling on Schengen free movement?
Immigration continues to be a hot topic in Germany, with the anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland party doing well in the recent state elections in east Germany. Now the government has been consulting with the main opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union, on ways to curb migration. The solution, at least temporarily, seems to be to place controls on all land borders – but what will this mean for the Schengen zone?
