Exclusively made for Monocle by Japanese artisanal brand Nozawa-Mingei, these Akabeko cow toys hail from Aizu, Fukushima. Traditionally they are painted in red but these handmade iterations have light pink, dark brown and off-white colourways. Created as good-luck charms, gifts or display items, the head will bob up and down if pressed.
It all began when Minako Hayakawa, CEO of Japanese artisanal brand Nozawa-Mingei, popped into our Tokyo shop. What started as a conversation turned into a collaboration and today Monocle is proud to be partnering with Nozawa-Mingei for an exclusive range of Akabeko cow toys. Based in Aizu, Fukushima, Nozawa-Mingei is a proud purveyor of Japanese craft traditions.
