Hoshinoya Kyoto, Genrokuyama-cho
This modern reinterpretation of Japan’s traditional ryokan is hidden away in the forested Arashiyama district. Mountain views, Western beds and cedar bathtubs feature in the 25 rooms, the most spacious being the Tsukihashi Maisonette, a two-storey riverside suite with tatami mats.

Moksa, Kami-Takano Higashiyama
The city’s leafy northeast is home to Moksa, a refreshing retreat far from the bustle. There are riverside rooms, private steam-bath saunas and a tranquil garden. The traditional breakfast and dinner, made using locally sourced herbs and vegetables, are served in the serene dining room.

Ace Hotel Kyoto, Kurumaya-cho
Designed in 1926, the Shinpuhkan mall has been renovated and expanded upon by architect Kengo Kuma to form part of Ace Hotel’s first opening in Japan. The 213-key property features interiors by Commune Design, which crafted a layered aesthetic that weaves Western and Japanese sensibilities.
