Melbourne

This culturally rich destination has something in store for nearly every kind of voyager.
A tree-lined avenue in Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne was briefly the richest city in the world, courtesy of the Victorian gold rush of the 19th century. The optimistic opulence of that time is on proud display in much of the architecture. But that is only half the story. Melbourne might often be dismissed as an antipodean facsimile of a European metropolis but the truth is much more interesting. Generations of migrants call this place home and each brought their customs and cultures to the mix. The result is Australia’s most dynamic hospitality scene, with bars, restaurants and cafés deploying Victoria’s bountiful produce in interesting ways. That is complemented by forward-thinking retail and the city’s status as Australia’s fashion capital.

Each point on the Melbourne compass has its own charming character. From the unvarnished grunge of the inner north to the well-heeled polish of the neighbourhoods south of the Yarra River, there is something for everyone. Unlike its rival Sydney, whose aesthetic attractions are apparent for all to see, Melbourne requires the visitor to be proactive. The city won’t reveal its secrets easily – you’ll have to go out and discover them for yourself. When you do, you won’t forget them in a hurry.

Essential information

  • Taxi from Melbourne Airport to the city: There isn’t a direct train link, so the best option is a taxi. In most cases, it costs approximately AU$70.
  • How much to tip in restaurants: It’s customary to only tip as an acknowledgement of great service. Rounding up your bill or adding a 10 per cent tip is fine in most instances. Should your bill be higher than anticipated, don’t fret – Australia loves a surcharge.
  • Where to get a caffeine fix: It’s almost redundant to recommend good coffee in Melbourne because the standard is so high. For a peek at the future of the industry though, try Patricia in the CBD or Ona and Disciple Roasters, both in Brunswick.
  • Pack your runners: If you don’t think a jog is a slog, Melbourne is perfect for you – its flat landscape and abundance of parks and tracks make it a fine city for getting your miles in.
  • Head to the market: Melbourne indisputably hosts Australia’s finest markets – visit the iconic Queen Victoria Market for hot jam doughnuts, fresh produce and more. When south of the Yarra River, check out South Melbourne Market and Prahran Market.
