Retail
Christian Kimber, CBD
Designer Christian Kimber might have been born in the UK but his sharp tailoring has come to define menswear in Melbourne. Visit for ready-to-wear and made-to-measure clothing with Italian, English and Australian influences.

Up There Store, CBD
Up There Store has been one of Melbourne’s standout menswear retailers since opening in 2010. Among the brands in the pared-back space are Paraboot, Junya Watanabe and Frama. Its sibling shop, Up There Athletics, is also a worthwhile visit.
Kloke, Fitzroy
After working for notable Australian fashion houses, couple Amy Gallagher and Adam Coombes combined their talents to launch this progressive label, which focuses on sharp silhouettes and high-quality fabrics.

PPHH Store, Fitzroy
Originally named Pickings and Parry, this menswear shop joined forces with its sister womenswear label, Heffernan and Haire, in 2022 and became PPHH Store. Its remit remains the same, providing Melburnians with quality garments from a small selection of brands, as well as custom alterations.
P Johnson, CBD
Patrick Johnson is perhaps Australia’s best-known tailor. The Melbourne locations of his eponymous label are reliable emissaries for his clothing philosophy of soft, light formalwear. It’s all about serious tailoring that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Blackhearts & Sparrows, Fitzroy
This independent drinks merchant was founded with the goal of democratising wine. Though it has inspired many imitators, the original is still the best. And with locations throughout Melbourne, you should be near a branch regardless of where you find yourself.

Readings, Carlton
Often cited as the finest bookshop in Australia, Readings is an essential stop for any visiting booklover. The Carlton flagship is packed with well-selected local and international titles and plays host to a regular roster of lively events. It is in the middle of Lygon Street, Melbourne’s Italian heartland.

Song for the Mute, CBD
Though it was founded in Sydney, this unisex brand is thoroughly at home in Melbourne. At the label’s Victorian outpost, you’ll find unique pieces that feel like a cross between items from Bode and Story MFG.
Somebuddy Loves You, Fitzroy
Stop by this independently owned multi-brand women’s boutique that champions Australian and New Zealand designers and place yourself in the hands of owner Lyndsey Spark. The surrounding neighbourhood is packed with great retail spots, including PDA Shop.
Dot Comme, CBD
A common joke about Melburnians is that they garb themselves exclusively in black – boutique Dot Comme has certainly contributed to making that a reality. Owner Otto La Rosa’s archival collection of classic Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake pieces is legendary for good reason.
