Culture
Sydney Modern, CBD
The gleaming new wing for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, designed by architecture studio Sanaa, combines blockbuster shows from global artists with a vast permanent collection of Indigenous artwork.

Phoenix Central Park, Chippendale
Tickets at this unique venue in Chippendale work on a balloting system, so if you’re interested, it’s worth entering before you land in Sydney. Performances are wide-ranging, covering everything from modern jazz to choral pieces. If you can secure a ticket, you’ll be treated to an engaging multisensory show in a striking space.
Rose Seidler House, Wahroonga
Austria-born modernist architect Harry Seidler’s legacy can be spotted throughout Sydney. But for an intimate glimpse of his early work, it’s worth seeking out the house that he built for his parents. It is considered one of the most influential postwar residential buildings in Australia and is open to the public on Sundays from 10.00 to 16.00.

Golden Age Cinema, Surry Hills
Though art deco gems such as the Randwick Ritz and the Hayden Orpheum are great spots to catch the latest releases, the most interesting cinema in Sydney is also one of its smallest. This former screening room for Paramount Studios shows everything from indie darlings to cult classics. Plus, it has an excellent cocktail bar.
Carriageworks, Eveleigh
From engaging art displays and concerts to fairs and a weekly farmers’ market, there’s always something interesting happening at this repurposed railway workshop. As evident by its name, the precinct is easy to get to by train.
