São Paulo's Hebraica club proves that preserving community and identity can mean tennis courts and water parks as much as synagogues — sport, style and heritage poolside.
It’s estimated that half of Brazil’s Jewish population of 150,000 live in São Paulo. And they are some of the luckiest: their city is home to Hebraica, a Jewish members’ country club. Located in the affluent suburb of Jardim Paulistano, the club, designed by Russian-Brazilian architect Gregori Warchavchik, was first opened in 1953 and covers an area of 54,000 sq m. Its facilities include 14 tennis courts, eight covered gymnasiums, a spa, water park and, of course, a synagogue. It describes itself as a community centre set up to preserve Jewish identity, not just through sport but also through educational and social events.
