Having a ball?

Based around Francesc Mitjans’ 1960s low-slung, lattice-concrete clubhouse, the recently refurbished Palma Sport & Tennis Club is beguiling enough to have those that swing by for lunch honing their serves by teatime. Developed by Sweden’s honorary Mallorquins Johanna and Mikael Landström (founders of the island’s estimable Portixol and Esplendido hotels), the Tennis Club is beautiful but means business: the clay courts are for playing (they host the ATP Legends Cup); the gym is photogenic but for making members more so; and the pool – though it shimmers like a Hockney – is for lengths. Austere? Never. Whip-smart? You bet. And going the full five sets makes a chilled glass of albariño that much crisper.
