Regulars have been dropping by for a trim at Totaken since the mid-20th century. Located on the outskirts of Tokyo, the shop is nearly unchanged from the day Masaji Hashimoto hung out his shingle in 1928. There’s a well-preserved charm about the worn wooden floorboards, standalone barber pole, and handcrafted windowpanes. Hashimoto would be pleased to know that the shop has stayed in the family. His daughter, Toshiko, is the owner and his granddaughter, Hideko, and her husband, Kazuhiko, run the day-to-day business, offering everything from haircuts to massages and facials.
