Night caller
Having converted one spare room into the perfect home office (see Monocle issue 4) we decided to turn our attentions to the guest room. Here we furnish the quarters with best-for-guests accoutrements.
We have so far failed to find a sofa bed on the market that meets our exacting standards, so a fully functioning guest room is the only alternative to putting up a pal on a podgy futon for a night or two. Cosiness is key to creating a welcoming atmosphere, a home-from-home for your friends to retire to.
Finding the right bed is paramount and we think we’ve found the soundest night’s sleep on a Schramm Basis. German bed maker Schramm was founded in 1923 as a padding and saddlery workshop that began making high-quality mattresses in the 1950s. The company is still run by the Schramm family, and in addition to beds it also supplies hotels and bars with upholstered furniture.
Poltrona Frau has collaborated with French designer Jean-Marie Massaud on this oak bedside table, and an easy chair will complete the guest room’s furniture collection – Turkish designers Autoban have added the Woody lounge chair to their ever-growing portfolio. All that remains is to accessorise the space with all those little touches that may turn your infrequent guest into a permanent fixture.
