Japan House, São Paulo

Brazil and Japan are separated by more than 17,000km as the crow flies. Culturally speaking, they might be even further apart but that hasn’t stopped leaders in Tokyo from reaching out with an ambitious global initiative. In late April, a new Japan House opened in central São Paulo. The idea is to combine art and culture with business and technology using exhibitions, shops, a restaurant, activities, talks and more. Monocle’s Frederick Bernas sits down with Angela Hirata, the institution’s president, to find out what the buzz is all about.
