Neighbourhoods

Three enclaves that unveil the city’s inner life
zurich

Küsnacht
A prosperous outpost for bathing and cosy dining
A short tram from Zürich city centre, Küsnacht is a picturesque lakeside town on the so-called “Goldküste” (“Gold Coast”), known for its abundant sunshine and exclusive residential streets. A highlight is Küsnachter Tobel, a forested ravine with wooden bridges, waterfalls and ancient ruins – an ideal escape for hikers and nature lovers.

The area also has a lively culinary scene, with standout restaurants such as Oxen, known for its traditional Swiss specialities. Küsnacht’s historic village centre is home to boutique shops and charming cafés, adding to its appeal. It’s no surprise that Tina Turner called Küsnacht home for many years, drawn to its serene beauty and high quality of life.

Seefeld
A leafy lakeside neighbourhood and Monocle’s HQ
A mix of urban convenience and lakeside tranquillity, Seefeld’s tree-lined streets are dotted with cafés, restaurants and boutique shops. Utoquai is the go-to spot for a quick swim, with wooden badi offering sun loungers and coffee kiosks, while Tiefenbrunnen boasts a wide grassy area perfect for unwinding by the shorefront. The neighbourhood is within walking distance of cultural landmarks such as Kunsthaus Zürich and the Opera House.

Food lovers will appreciate La Muña, where Peruvian and Japanese flavours meet stunning lake views. For shopping, Trunk Clothiers brings a touch of London’s Chiltern Street to Zürich, while The Monocle Shop & Café offers a selection of fashion and design goods alongside excellent coffee and aperitivi. A short stroll along the lake will lead you to Zürichhorn, a peaceful green space home to the striking Pavillon Le Corbusier. Seefeld is close to everything yet refreshingly calm, making it one of Zürich’s most coveted neighbourhoods.

Aussersihl
Edgy, diverse and constantly evolving
Aussersihl – more commonly known as Chreis Cheib – is one of Zürich’s most dynamic areas. Once an industrial and red-light area, it has transformed into a hotspot for the city’s creative crowd. By day, the cafés and independent shops attract a mix of artists and entrepreneurs and locals, while at night the neon lights of packed bars and restaurants light the streets. Charlatan is a favourite for its laid-back atmosphere and varied menu, making it a great place to start the evening. For those looking for something heartier, Schnupf serves up well-executed Swiss dishes, with the option to stay for a drink in the same cosy setting.

25hours Hotel Aussersihl

To round off the night, Olé Olé Bar provides an unpretentious spot for a final cocktail before heading across the street to 25hours Hotel, a stylish, design-forward stay that perfectly reflects the playful spirit of the district. Whether for a casual drink, a great meal or a long night out, this is Zürich at its most vibrant.
