Iittala and Arabia, Kluuvi
With roots tracing back to the 19th century, Iittala and Arabia are among Finland’s most storied design houses. The two brands – both owned by Fiskars and whose flagships are in the same building – have collaborated with legendary Finnish designers, such as Kaj Franck and Timo Sarpaneva, on timeless creations.

Frenn, Punavuori
This menswear brand specialises in elegant, practical wardrobe staples that straddle the line between formal and casual: the Jere jacket is as suitable for going to the opera as it is for after-work drinks. Other essentials include the organic-cotton jersey Hemmo shirt and merino-wool Seppo trousers. Each piece comes in a variety of neutrals, including dark grey and olive.

Kaartinen & Kuusela, Töölö
A popular vintage shop where it’s not uncommon to find big-name labels such as Brioni, Canali, Zegna and Kiton. It’s run by skilled tailors, so everything can be altered.
Marimekko, Citywide
This heritage fashion house made its name through colourful textiles and bold patterns, such as the floral Unikko. The brand, whose fabrics are printed in Helsinki, has been given a gentle makeover by its Danish creative director, Rebekka Bay, who has streamlined its collections with sharp silhouettes and a more restrained palette.
Common, Punavuori
Kohsuke Nakamura left Tokyo to study in Helsinki and, in 2007, established concept shop Common, named so for the similarities he noticed between Japan and Finland. Japanese labels such as Engineered Garments, Fog Linen Work, Postalco and Rototo are on offer, as well as cult Finnish brands, including Tarvas and Karhu. You’ll also find a fine selection of magazines – Apartamento and Popeye among them – on display.

Vibae, Punavuori
Pared-back aesthetics and exceptional comfort define this footwear brand. All models are made from high-quality, sustainable leather and with insoles that adapt to your foot. The unisex Roma sandals and Zuma slip-ons with collapsible heels are both good choices.
Papershop, Punavuori
A must-visit for stationary lovers, this elegant shop sells well-designed paper products, including own-brand wrapping, colourful notepads and beautiful prints. The in-house printer allows items to be personalised.
Salakauppa, Ullanlinna
Aamu Song and Johan Olin bonded over their love of traditional handicrafts before travelling the world together. Now they collaborate with craftspeople from Finland, Mexico, Japan and beyond to create artisanal toys, clothing, and, occasionally, homeware. Contact the shop in advance to check its opening hours.

Gauhar, Ullanlinna
This lifestyle shop favours high-quality materials and a timeless Nordic aesthetic over trends. Alongside ready-to-wear staples made in relaxed, slightly oversized silhouettes, Gauhar also stocks accessories such as scarves and jewellery, as well as home fragrances and soaps.
Hakaniemi Market Hall, Hakaniemi
If you want high-quality ingredients, you should head to Hakaniemi Market Hall, which first opened in 1914. Here you’ll find greengrocers, butchers, bakers, fishmongers and purveyors of other fine produce. Must-tries include the cheeses from Lentävä Lehmä.
