Silver Lake Pool & Inn, Silver Lake
The Palisociety’s most neighbourhood-friendly property is compact, has a relaxed ambience and is built around a pool where locals linger while topping up the tan. The rooms feature oak furnishings and linen upholstery, with balconies that open onto the courtyard. Nearby you’ll find the Mohawk General Store and wine bars on Sunset Boulevard and Silver Lake Reservoir.
Sunset Tower Hotel, West Hollywood
Built in 1931 as a luxury apartment block, the Sunset Tower was once home to notable residents such as Frank Sinatra, Howard Hughes, Marilyn Monroe and Jean Harlow. The building, which was revamped into a hotel in the 1980s, has undergone several facelifts but its old-school charm remains. Staff are attentive and courteous, the pool with city views is a valuable bit of real estate and The Tower Bar, which was once the apartment where mobster Bugsy Siegel ran an illegal gambling ring, is one of the best places to grab a drink in Los Angeles.
Chateau Marmont, West Hollywood
Plenty of mischievous nights have been had at Chateau Marmont, including when Led Zeppelin rode their motorcycles through the halls. To add to the mythical history, the hotel features French Gothic aesthetics and still maintains its bohemian character. For those in town for a few weeks, plump for the Hillside Two Bedroom Bungalow, which comes with a private garden.
Alsace LA, West Adams
Bauhaus-influenced interiors, white-oak detailing and desert landscaping come together at this laid-back lodging that’s perfect for longer stays. It’s also one of Los Angeles’s most convenient addresses, with it being only a short drive from the airport (excluding traffic).
Santa Monica Proper Hotel, Santa Monica
This is one of designer Kelly Wearstler’s best hotels. Its art deco bones, guest rooms coloured in a sandy palette, pool and easygoing atmosphere makes the rest of Santa Monica feel like it’s trying too hard. At sunset, head to the rooftop bar and catch the Pacific light at its finest.
