Hotels
The Kin, Shivaji Park
The duo behind The Kin are siblings Imrun and Guneet Sethi, who transformed their grandfather’s original hotel into this art deco-themed bolthole. No guest room is the same: some feature poured terrazzo and others have wooden flooring but all include custom teak furniture and art from a local gallery. Visit the in-house concept store, which stocks design souvenirs such as ikat cushions and artisanal candles. The location near Shivaji Park – a spot where locals exercise and play cricket – is far removed from tourist traps.

Abode Bombay, Colaba
The Sassoons – a Baghdadi Jewish family often nicknamed the “Rothschilds of the East” – once lived in this property, which features art deco and mid-century modern accents. Teak armchairs, sofas with sunburst detailing and copper bathtubs are all anchored by a sophisticated palette of whites and dark browns. Colaba is home to the Gateway of India monument, cheerful beer spots and the city’s art district. Nearly a dozen galleries, including Nature Morte and Aakara Modern, are within walking distance.

The Oberoi, Nariman Point
This hotel’s seafront location is an excellent base if you’re looking to do business in South Mumbai. Expect to see CEOs, entrepreneurs and local government officials rubbing shoulders in The Oberoi’s modernist atrium. Plump for a suite on one of the higher floors, which feature vintage Indian textiles and sweeping views of the water. The Eau Bar is a great spot to enjoy classic cocktails while watching the sun set.
