Stockholm
Stockholm is in the swing of things – there are innovative bars, world-class restaurants and cosy cafés in which to seek refuge during the colder months. The dynamic retail landscape is full of independent brands and established labels that champion elegant Scandinavian style. Culture abounds in renowned museums (Nationalmuseum, Nordiska Museet and Moderna Museet are just a few fine examples) and up-and-coming galleries are making waves on the growing arts scene. There are also many sites of natural beauty, from swimming spots in the city centre to the nearby island of Lidingö, as well as majestic old buildings in the beautiful Swedish grace style of the 1920s.

It’s also a convenient launchpad for your travels across the region – just hop on one of the gorgeous old ferries and head out to Lake Mälaren, which stretches all the way from Stockholm to Västerås, 120km inland. You can also head to the Baltic Sea for spectacular views of the rugged scenery (and perhaps of a seal or two). Whether you’re here for a weekend or longer, there’s plenty to delve into when you visit the Swedish capital. Here’s what we recommend.
Essential information
- Transport from the airport: Skip the taxi for the Arlanda Express, which costs SEK340 (€31.44).
- How much to tip in restaurants: About 10 per cent of the bill is customary.
- Try a local delicacy: Don’t miss out on traditional home cooking or husmanskost, which includes dishes such as nystekt strömming (fried Baltic herring with mashed potatoes).
- Know some etiquette: If you’re invited into someone’s home, remember to take your shoes off before entering.
- ‘Fika’ is important: Leave time in your schedule for several café breaks. We recommend Svedjan Bageri in Södermalm, where you’ll find Stockholm’s best kanelbulle (cinnamon bun).
