Bureau chief: Zurich

Monocle is looking for a bureau chief to run our outpost in Zürich, working across print, radio and online. You will have several years' experience as a journalist, an understanding of the Monocle brand and knowledge of the region. You will also be as comfortable interviewing a PM as writing about the worlds of culture and media. French and German language skills an advantage.

While based in Zürich, you will need to travel throughout Europe and the work will not follow regular hours. This is a job for somebody who has great contacts and fresh ideas and wants to be part of a fast-growing company. It is a role that is demanding and rewarding.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing all staffing and management for shops (London, New York, Toronto, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore) and café (London).
  • Product development for all collaborations – working with managers to get products into development and production for retail and online.
  • Strategy for pop-ups and concessions.
  • Oversight of wholesale business and growing business development.
  • Development of branding and visual merchandising programmes.
  • Defining brand experience, menu and service style and ensuring consistency between shops and cafés.
  • Development of new retail and F&B formats.

The position is London-based with considerable Asia and North America travel.

Requirements

Our ideal Retail and Hospitality Director will know the focus of our core businesses (magazine, web and radio), understand the power of brand experiences and drive customer loyalty, brand awareness and revenues across both café and retail operations.

You will have significant experience at management level within a premium, service-based organisation: hotel, airline or luxury goods retail. This includes managing multiple outlets, seasonality of demand and an international customer base.

You need to be able to identify areas of change, recommend future actions and manage implementation, as well as demonstrate a strong commitment to balancing the business operation with customers’ needs and Monocle brand values.

Sub editor

Monocle magazine is looking for an experienced and talented sub editor to work at our London headquarters in Marylebone. This is a key role in a busy office for an international publication that is recognised for high standards in delivering the written word.

This job entails subbing across Monocle’s many print products – 10 annual magazines and two special issues as well as books and travel guides – plus online content, radio-show descriptions, advertorial copy, press releases, product proposals, Monocle Café menus and much more.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has at least three years’ experience on a subs desk for a national magazine or newspaper allied to a comprehensive knowledge of InDesign.
  • Has a methodical and organised approach and can work effectively and quickly up against multiple deadlines.
  • Can write engaging and informative headlines and standfirsts.
  • Has supreme confidence in their grammar and spelling and can pick up house style and tone quickly.
  • Can communicate effectively with section editors, writers and other production departments.
  • Is willing to put in overtime as and when required in the evening and at least once a month at weekends.

Monocle magazine is looking for an experienced photo editor to join the photo department at our London headquarters. You will need to be organised, hard working and a creative problem solver.

This job entails commissioning photographers around the world and picture research. You will produce varied shoots for the magazine as well as the Monocle website, our merchandise department and special projects.

We are looking for someone who:
