SIHH Geneva 2016

The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva is the watchmaking world’s premier venue to showcase horological hardware. This year brands reworked case shapes, presented vintage-inspired designs and innovated under the dial. Here are 10 highlights from the 2016 edition.

01 Panerai, Luminor 1950 3 Days Acciaio

The chocolate-brown colour references the patina of radium dials on vintage Panerai timepieces. Comes in a limited edition of 1,000 and has a 47mm steel case.

02 Audemars Piguet, Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked

Gérald Genta’s 1972 design never gets old. This gorgeous 41mm model has a double-balance wheel escapement – a world first – to improve precision. Available in steel or rose gold.

03 Cartier, Drive de Cartier

This jeweller-watchmaker draws from automotive design for its new collection. The pattern on this classic guilloché dial with Roman numerals evokes a car radiator grill. It also has a self-winding movement and a case in pink gold or steel.

04 A Lange & Söhne, Richard Lange Jumping Seconds

The uber-luxury German watchmaker pushes the envelope here with a movement that permits telling the time in strict one-second intervals for better accuracy. Has a platinum case and is limited to 100 pieces.

05 Jaeger-LeCoultre, Reverso Tribute Gyrotourbillon

The Reverso’s iconic form – with double-face design – dates to 1931 and this year Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiled several new pieces. This model has a new Grand Complication that appears to float in mid-air and is a 75-piece limited series.

06 Vacheron Constantin, Overseas Ultra-Thin

This svelte timepiece for purists evokes a 1970s vibe with a dial in sunburst grey. Offered in white gold, the 40mm model comes with three straps: gold bracelet, alligator and black rubber.

07 H Moser & Cie, Swiss Alp

In a cheeky jab at Apple, Moser unveiled this boxy-shaped wristwatch. Industry observers applauded the all-mechanical wonder with its hand-wound in-house calibre, chic fumé dial and kudu-leather strap.

08 Laurent Ferrier, Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Hairspring

Award-winning Geneva watchmaker Laurent Ferrier has dreamed up another subtle beauty. Set in a cushion-shaped case, this black onyx dial is paired with a black alligator strap.

09 HYT, H4 Metropolis

HYT’s R&D team includes chemists and a nuclear engineer. Encased in titanium, this monster 51mm Metropolis uses fluid in place of the hour hand and has a light source powered by a mechanical dynamo.

10 Panerai, Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic Acciaio

The master of nuance, Panerai courted its fans with this first-time white dial for its Radiomir 1940 collection. Its proportions – it has a 42mm steel case – hark back to the brand’s mid-century models.
