DANCE: MONTRÉAL

Carte Blanche: Corps de Walk

Norway's leading contemporary dance company, Carte Blanche, performs at Montréal’s Théâtre Maisonneuve this weekend after stopping in Québec City and Ottawa on its first Canadian tour. Corps de Walk, a procession of walks by 12 androgynous bodies clad in beige body tights, is an expression of movement and emotion. The tight, precise action and the uniform look accentuate both the body’s functionality and its individuality, set to arresting music under spectacular lighting. Carte Blanche is also performing at the John F Kennedy Center in Washington on 6 and 7 March, and at the Joyce Theater in New York from 15 to 17 March.

Théâtre Maisonneuve, La Place des Arts 2 March 2013.

Yozo Ukita

This Sunday is the opening of an exhibition showcasing the latest paintings by Yozo Ukita, an abstract artist from Osaka who was also known as a member of the Gutai Art Association, an influential avant-garde movement in post-war Japan. He joined the group after meeting founder Jiro Yoshihara in 1948 while Ukita was editor at Kirin, a children’s magazine that went on to shape Gutai’s identity. Located in the Take Ninagawa gallery in Tokyo, his monochrome, minimalistic works will be on display until mid-April.

Take Ninagawa gallery, 2-12-4-1F, Higashi-Azabu, Minatoku. Opening reception Sunday, 3 March. Until Saturday, 13 April. Open daily 11.00-19.00, except Sundays and Mondays.

BOOKS: LONDON

Publish And Be Damned 2013

King of the slush pile? Rejected by publishers? You might want to check out the annual Publish And Be Damned self-publishing fair in London this weekend at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. The fair features over 50 publishing companies and promotes alternative possibilities for distributing the written word outside of the mainstream. A day of panel discussions and films will be followed by an evening of DJing at the bar, so that fledgling authors can meet, dance and indulge their nihilistic, misunderstood writer personas in full.

Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall on Saturday 2 March.

MUSIC: UK/BELGIUM

Melody’s Echo Chamber

Playing a handful of dates across the UK and Belgium this week is Parisian psychedelic pop chanteuse Melody Prochet aka Melody’s Echo Chamber. Prochet’s playfully melodic songs are often found swimming in a bubbly haze of jarring, feedback-flecked noise. But underneath lies an easy-on-the ear sound borrowing elements of 1960s pop and 1990s shoegaze that’s not a giant leap from Prochet’s better-known musical collaborator Kevin Parker of Tame Impala. She’ll be at the Haunt in Brighton on Sunday before heading to Manchester, London and Brussels throughout the week.

Catch shows on 3 March: Brighton The Haunt, 4 March: Manchester The Deaf Institute, 5 March: London Scala, 8 March: Brussels Botanique.
