FESTIVAL: TORONTO

Luminato

This weekend is your last chance to check out the eighth installment of the Toronto-wide creative arts festival Luminato. The 10 days of festivities, which gather local and international talent in disciplines ranging from music to dance and theatre, culminate this Saturday with a performance of Kontakthof at the Bluma Appel Theatre. First staged in 1978, this dance piece conceived by German choreographer Pina Bausch examines the tensions between men and women. But if you’d prefer to take it easy, why not soak up some sun at the “Cardboard Beach” in David Pecaut Square – an interactive installation by Cuban conceptual art duo Los Carpinteros.

At venues across Toronto. See website for details. Until 15 June.

MUSIC: GLOBAL

Tomas Barfod: Love Me

Danish dance-music producer and drummer Tomas Barfod is one third of bouncy synth-poppers WhoMadeWho but his most recent solo album, Love Me, leans to the slightly more introspective tone of his 2012 debut, Salton Sea, rather than the more ecstatic experiments of his bandmates. Featuring frequent collaborator Nina K, Barfod has created a bold collection of tunes that borrow a little of the icy Danish cool – always bleak yet strangely enticing – that also serves ‘Nordic Noir’ authors so well. Yes, Love Me may be a bit of a chilly listen but anyone who fails to move (or be moved) by near-faultless pop such as that found on “Pulsing” is probably frozen solid already.

‘Love Me’ is available to buy now.
