Nicaragua cancels plans for a China-backed Atlantic-to-Pacific canal
In a major setback for China, which seeks to expand its footprint in Latin America, Nicaragua has ditched its plan to build a canal linking the Atlantic to the Pacific. The news comes nearly 10 years after the project broke ground. Since the era of Spanish rule, there have been more than 70 proposals to construct such a route, with blueprints drawn up by UK, US and French engineers but ultimately abandoned.
