Executive lounge
Japan’s original capital is a city of impressive history and elegance. The temples, shrines and wooden buildings dotted around Nara give it a relaxed calm and poise that JW Marriott has matched inside its new opening: the first international luxury hotel in the city and also the inaugural Japanese property for the brand.

Uplifting design
From the rolling hills that make a stunning backdrop to the city to the gentle deer roaming around the historic town centre, there’s plenty from Nara’s surroundings that has made its way into the hotel’s interiors.
London design firm GA Group brought an airy, homely and warm atmosphere to the space. Minimalist furniture meets intricate detailing that points to the city’s past as the end point of the silk road. Subtle touches include the signature deer horns adorning the walls of many of the 158 rooms and suites and the artwork hung inside the dining room.

Spa talent
Nara is a city where sometimes it feels like time stands still – and there’s nowhere better to slow down than in the hotel’s spa. Get an aromatherapy treatment or dip your toes into the magnificent fifth-floor pool. Plus, there’s a special mindfulness programme, designed to help guests relax and refocus.

Dining in
The Azekura offers three styles: grilled teppanyaki; delectable sushi and artful kaiseki, in the restaurant or in private rooms. Honouring cross-cultural influences, Silk Road Dining offers its take on European and Asian cuisines. And at the Flying Stag bar, staff mix inventive drinks with herbs from the hotel’s sunny garden.
