Zurich Insurance Group
MonocleWhere ideas grow
One of the world’s most sustainable global HQs has reopened on the banks of Lake Zürich. We visit Zurich Insurance Group’s newly renovated Campus.
Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich) has reopened its Quai Zurich Campus, which blends eco-friendly architecture and a stunning prism façade with the original building dating back to 1900. It’s a handsome statement about the importance of physical spaces in this age of video calls. This is an office that’s more than just a place to work: it’s a home for the company’s community and a part of the cultural fabric of the city, putting Zurich’s stamp on the world. So don’t just stand there – come in.
Space for creativity
The spaces throughout the Campus differ to suit employees’ needs and are fully dynamic and mobile. The Innovation Hub with adjustable walls can be shifted to create the necessary space: small rooms for informal catch-ups or a conference room for meeting clients.
Sustainability is key at Zurich. The Quai Zurich Campus has solar panels on the roof to generate electricity for the building and lake water is used in a smart heating and cooling system. That’s not to mention the green walls and plants that you’ll find indoors and out.
1.
Room for community
At the Quai Zurich Campus there’s more than 23,000 sq m to play with – plenty of room for customers to pop in for coffee or in-person consultations now that the site is open for business. Its thriving community can meet in one of the Campus’s many social spaces and conference rooms or sit down in its 400-seat auditorium, where Zurich hosts interactive events leveraging its technology to be broadcast around the world and speakers regularly give fascinating talks.
2.
Good neighbours
Zurich didn’t just want to create something for its employees – it wanted to give back to the community. It has created a well-appointed café (better known as the Quai Café) that’s open to the public in a beautiful courtyard featuring a striking 24-tonne sandstone fountain. Visitors can also drop by the Campus’s Heritage Center, a restored section of the old building with an interactive museum about the company’s history and evolution. Why not get to know the neighbours?
3.
Well fed
People come together around food – that’s no different in the workplace. And Zurich makes sure that it’s not just any food. At the Quai Zurich Campus restaurant, Alfred’s Kitchen, there’s all manner of quality fare that is local, seasonal, sustainable and healthy. Regular team cooking events bring in celebrity Swiss chefs. Plus: there are dairy products from Zita, the company cow. You’ll struggle to find milk fresher than that.
4.
Cultural foundations
There’s been attention paid to every detail of the renovated site: from the prism façade that reflects the old and new building to the bold Sol LeWitt murals that adorn the bright reception area. Seen from afar as well as inside, Zurich’s new global headquarters is more than just an office – it’s a statement of the company’s identity and its cultural roots. And it has never looked so good.
5.
Green living
For Zurich, interaction is as important as protecting the environment. That’s why its courtyard is adorned in greenery and there are clever systems in place that reduce energy usage. One third of the open spaces is plants, cacti or similar. Zurich aims to achieve platinum certification for WELL and LEED, the highest rankings for sustainable and well-designed buildings.
