The Balearics
With so many Balearic beaches to see, the hardest part is often deciding where to go. With a sailboat, you can drift and explore endlessly. Set off from Mahón to bask in the archipelago’s quieter charms.
Spectacular coastlines, secluded coves and steady winds: the Balearic islands are Spain’s quintessential sailing destination. While each of the four isles abounds with picturesque spots, cruising past the ever-shifting landscapes on a sun-warmed deck makes for an experience far greater than the sum of their parts. Whether by sailboat or chartered yacht, on your own or with a crew to run the show, the Menorcan capital of Mahón is the ideal gateway for your nautical adventure. Spend an afternoon wandering around the town’s whitewashed streets, popping into archaeology museums, handsome boutiques and well-curated art galleries, and you’ll witness Mediterranean past and present around every corner. Curiosity awakened, set sail for the archipelago’s lesser-known corners, from the craggy shores of Cabrera to the white sands of Espalmador. At sea, freedom knows no bounds.
01.
Cristine Bedfor
While it’s romantic to be rocked to sleep by the waves, if you prefer the solid ground beneath your bed then check in to Mahón’s Cristine Bedfor. Among the individually decorated guest rooms, our favourite is number 25 with its leafy courtyard views.
02.
Hauser & Wirth
Set on an islet in a former British naval hospital, the latest rural outpost of Hauser & Wirth gallery brings world-class artistry to the bay of Mahón. Moor your boat in the city’s port and take the 15-minute ferry ride to Illa del Rei.
03.
Cala Alcaufar
You’re spoilt for choice for idyllic swimming spots near Mahón, but not many can top the laid-back atmosphere of Cala Alcaufar. The waters here are particularly pristine and, for a post-swim drink, there’s a well-stocked chiringuito beach bar.
