PHOTOGRAPHY: TORONTO

Interchanges

It’s hard to appreciate the architectural beauty of highway interchanges from the ground but Toronto photographer Peter Andrew Lusztyk has taken gone to great lengths (and heights) to make it possible to admire North America from a birds’ eye view. Shooting interchanges from Toronto to Phoenix from a slow-moving, single engine Cessna plane with a side window removed, his breathtaking photos show are being exhibited at Pikto Gallery and print house in Toronto’s artsy Distillery District.

Pikto Gallery, 22 Gristmill Lane. Open Monday to Friday 9.00-19.00; Saturday and Sunday 12.00-18.00. Until 31 July.

EXHIBITION: TOKYO

Ceramics and Ukiyo-e Masterpieces from the Hagi Uragami Museum

A special selection of 130 Chinese and Korean ceramics and 62 classic ukiyo-e prints by the likes of Hokusai, Utamaro and Sharaku is being exhibited at the Nezu Museum in Aoyama this summer. This is the largest exhibition to be brought to Tokyo from Hagi Uragami Museum’s permanent collection in Yamaguchi Prefecture, as is it the very first time that the Nezu Museum displays ukiyo-e prints in its beautiful building designed by Kengo Kuma.

The ukiyo-e prints are exhibited in two parts: the first, with grand pieces such as Hokusai's Mount Fuji at Dawn, is on display until this weekend (23 June). On your way out, don't miss the serene walk in the maze-like traditional Japanese gardens dotted with statues, a pond and old tea ceremony houses – in honour of the museum founder, who was a tea enthusiast.

Nezu Museum, 6-5-1 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku. Open 10.00-17.00. Closed on Mondays except 15 July. Until 15 July.

Don’t miss the UK premier of Syrian filmmaker Joud Said’s controversial film Round Trip.

EXHIBITION: DUBAI

Chromophobia

Chromophobia is a study of contrast between images and our perception of reality. São Paulo-born Jessica Mein’s vibrant collages draw our focus to the humble pixel and also breathe new life into salvaged billboards. While the monochrome line-work of Algerian-French artist Abdelkader Benchamma’s “Blue Beam Project” satirises the use of technology to exploit our sense of fear. There’s also video and audio pieces, and they are all designed to give viewers a wholly new experience while viewing source materials we might all be familiar with.

Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde Street 8, A Serkal Avenue, Unit 17 Al Quoz 1, Dubai. Open Saturday to Thursday, 10.00-19.00. Until 28 July.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: HATFIELD

Night + Day

Head out to the English countryside this weekend to catch a new festival organised by the XX in the scenic grounds of Hatfield House just north of London. Night + Day on Saturday features a line-up that’s a who’s-who of laidback electronica and art pop, including Jon Hopkins, Poliça, Solange and Mount Kimbie. Plus, of course, London’s best exports of pleasingly melancholic mope-pop, the XX. The Night + Day festival has been making its way across Europe after weekends in Lisbon and Berlin earlier this year. It serves as a refined, relaxing finale to a successful pan-European jaunt, and also a mini rehearsal for what you need to pack for Glastonbury next weekend.

Night + Day festival, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, AL9 5NQ. Saturday only.
