PHOTO FESTIVAL: PERPIGNAN
Visa pour l'Image Perpignan 2013
This weekend head to the southern French town of Perpignan for the opening of Visa Pour l’Image, the world’s largest international photojournalism festival which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It’s here where emerging talent gets discovered (think Lise Sarfati, Paolo Pellegrin or Laurent Van der Stockt) and old talent gets revisited – this year’s event will showcase a large retrospective of Don McCullin. With symposiums on war photography and film screenings covering anything from expeditions in Papua New Guinea to musical counterculture, there might just be a picture for everyone.
At locations around the city. Open 10.00-19.00. Until 7 September.

EXHIBITION: MELBOURNE
From Nowhere to Nowhere
Opening this Saturday is David Mutch’s latest exhibition From Nowhere to Nowhere at Melbourne’s Beam Contemporary art gallery. Through photographs, video and sculpture, Mutch forces us to ask ourselves if we are just another face in a crowd of city dwellers too wrapped up in a uniform pop culture. Depicting striking yet cold and foreboding scenes such as a lone figure in rain mac out-of- place in a stark white gallery setting, the “nowhere” theme is amplified throughout. But Mutch is quickly securing a place of his own in Australian art.
Beam Contemporary, 30 Guildford Lane. Open Thursday to Saturday, 12.00-18.00. Until 28 August.

EXHIBITION: LA
Never Built: Los Angeles
Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin have selected a collection of works of what could have been today’s City of Angels with design help from Clive Wilkinson Architects. Dozens of proposals – blueprints, renderings and even hand-drawings – are on display at the Architecture and Design Museum. While never realised, the exhibition showcases how even yesterday’s discarded projects can be reinterpreted as visionary art and still inspire new ideas.
Architecture and Design Museum, 6032 Wilshire Boulevard. Open Tuesday to Friday, 11.00-17.00; Saturday to Sunday 12.00–18.00. Until 13 October.

Zola Jesus: Versions.
Growing up in rural Wisconsin seems to have filled Zola Jesus’s (aka operatically trained Nika Roza Danilova) last three albums with a loner’s sense of purpose – all dramatic gothic synths and punishing industrial beats. But her latest effort, Versions, takes that emotional punch and surrounds it with intricately beautiful strings. At times it reveals an intensely melodic side to her work that will attract pop fans looking for something a bit darker, and at others it sounds like she’s still playing for absolutely nobody else but herself. And so far, Jesus knows best.
Versions is available to buy now.
