American Beauty: The Opulent Pre-Depression Architecture of Detroit
Detroit may no longer be living up to its one- time moniker “The Paris of the Midwest” but Canadian photographer Philip Jarmain is determined to capture whatever remains of the city’s glory days of the early 1900s. His photography show American Beauty opens Saturday in San Francisco at the Meridian Gallery, curated by Sheeka Arbuthnot. Large-format photographs of Detroit’s deteriorating historical architecture and standouts such as the Eastown Theatre not only visually make an impact, but are also a poignant reminder that even large and powerful cities can crumble if they don't keep up.

A Journey Through London Subculture: 1980s to Now
As a part of the ICA’s off-site installations this summer, A Journey Through London Subculture: 1980s to Now takes over the The Old Selfridges Hotel to showcase the best art, fashion and graphic design that originally emerged from the city’s post-punk era. Looking at the work of artists and designers such as Gilbert & George, Leigh Bowery and Alexander McQueen, the exhibit aims to show how the alternative scenes of the past have shaped the counterculture and the artists of the present day.

Laura Li Nogueira: Paper Affairs
Laura Li Nogueira is a Hong Kong-based artist whose latest work, Paper Affairs, is at the cityps Artify Gallery this weekend. Nogueira uses the traditional Chinese technique of paper cutting to playfully satirise the people and events dominating the Hong Kong headlines. Stories such as the Hong Kong chief executive CY Leung’s seemingly endless scandals and the city’s fascination with celebrity are all depicted in Nogueira’s paper works, providing a light-hearted look at everyday news in Hong Kong.

Anish Kapoor in Istanbul
Istanbul’s Sakip Sabanci Museum is showing the first ever exhibition in Turkey of celebrated sculptor Anish Kapoor. Curator Sir Norman Rosenthal’s picks focus on the artist’s never-before-seen sculptures made out of marble and alabaster. Kapoor, who was the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at London’s Royal Academy of Arts back in 2009, is set to also showcase works that are inspired by Cappadocia region in Turkey, and Istanbul’s Roman and Ottoman architecture.

Múm: Smilewound
Iceland’s Múm – a collective of musicians with a penchant for mixing soft folky melodies and analogue-sounding electronica, return this week with their seventh album, Smilewound. It’s a refinement of the increasingly pop sound that the band have been headed towards since emerging in 1997. The barely-there whispers and surreally avant-garde sounds that dominated their early work are now gone, but in their place comes a self-assured songwriting confidence that only experience can bring. We all have to grow up sometime – luckily Múm are doing it gracefully, and tunefully.
