FILM FESTIVAL: CHICAGO

Chicago International Film Festival

Michael Kutza, the founder of the Chicago International Film Festival, has once again selected 150 features from more than 50 countries for the 50th edition of the extravaganza. Scandinavian films make a substantial appearance this year – this weekend, watch revenge thriller In Order of Disappearance, which brings Stellan Skarsgård back together with Norwegian director Hans Petter. Skarsgård plays a snowplough driver who turns to bloody revenge against the criminal underground after his son dies of a heroin overdose. For a timeless classic, a specially restored version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is screening at the AMC River East 21 theatre on Saturday with producer Paul Zaentz attending. The feature originally premiered at this very festival almost 40 years ago and went on to pick up five Academy Awards in 1975.

At venues across Chicago; see website for details. Until 23 October.

PAINTINGS: LONDON

Nabil Nahas: Phoenix Dactylifera

Head down to Ben Brown Fine Arts gallery in London to explore Phoenix Dactylifera, Lebanese painter Nabil Nahas’s most significant exhibition in the UK to date. Her vast and varied body of work mines the landscapes of the Middle East for inspiration. From the olive trees of the Levant's coastal villages to the magnificent cedar trees rooted in the mountains of Lebanon, Nahas’s colour palette of gold, ochre, black and blue reveals a sense of nostalgia towards the land of his childhood. For reasons known only to the painter, but entirely open to interpretation for the viewer, Nahas has chosen to crop many of her paintings around tree trunks.

Ben Brown Fine Arts, 12 Brook’s Mews. Open Monday to Friday, 11.00 – 18.00; Saturday 10.30–14.30. Until 14 November.

ART: ISTANBUL

Disquiet

Currently showing at both Galeri Zilberman and Pi Artworks galleries in Istanbul is the group exhibition Disquiet, curated by media, contemporary and Middle Eastern art critic Nat Muller, who is based in Rotterdam and Beirut. The collection captures the foreboding sentiment expressed in 21st-century life as well as some works conveying a conjecture of the future. The highlight is a video installation titled “The Golden Record” produced by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige. The married couple, who reside in Paris and Beirut, created the piece as part of their project The Lebanese Rocket Society, which comments on the forgotten legacy of Lebanon's space programme in the 1960s.

Galeri Zilberman, Bülbül Mh., Mısır Bugdayı Sk No:10, Beyoglu. Open Tuesday to Friday, 11.00-19.30; Saturday 12.00-19.00. Pi Artworks, 163/4 Istikal Cadessi, Misir Apartment, Beyoglu. Monday to Saturday, 10.00-19.00. Until 6 November.

MUSIC: LONDON

Spiritland

Spiritland is a new haunt in east London for the contemplative appreciation of great music and lovers of all things warm, crackly and hopefully made of wax. The pop-up space at London’s Merchants’ Tavern comes with a soundsystem of the highest order and a DJ roster to match. After midweek slots from the likes of Franz Ferdinand, this weekend features Lemon Jelly’s Fred Deakin and designer, DJ and photographer Rik Moran. Future spinners include gallerist Ossian Ward and The Quietus’s John Doran. You might even find Monocle 24’s very own Paul Noble on the wheels of steel (full disclosure: it’s his bar) so you know the tunes are going to be good.

Spiritland at Merchants Tavern, 36 Charlotte Road. Open Monday to Friday 17.00-0.00; Saturday 13.00-0.00. Until 1 January.
