2 July 2011

1. Music: Global

-SBTRKT 'Sbtrkt'

If Daft Punk and James Blake had a lovechild, its first cry would probably sound like SBTRKT’s debut, 40 minutes of mind-blowing beats that playfully alternate two-step, electronica and dubstep, topped-up with soulful vocals by Sampha and Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano. After gaining ground remixing M.I.A. and Basement Jaxx, the masked South London producer (pronounced “subtract”) is making a name for himself with a distinctive sound and proves that he is one to watch for the years to come.

‘Sbtrkt’ is out now.

2. Book: Global

-Clare Peake 'Under a Canvas Sky'

Written by the only daughter of Mervyn Peake, this book is a bittersweet memoir of life standing on the shoulders of giants, namely her stoic mother Maeve and irrepressible father, the artist, poet, illustrator and author of The Gormenghast Trilogy. Amusing and anecdotal, Clare Peake’s writing is most affecting when she talks of her father’s decline and untimely death, aged just 45. The book is a wry tale of life in the bygone bohemia of the 1950s and ’60s.

‘Under a Canvas Sky: Living Outside Gormenghast’ is on sale now, published by Constable & Robinson.

3. Pop-up Shop: London

-A Bathing Ape

Tokyo-based streetwear brand A Bathing Ape opens a pop-up shop at London’s Truman Brewery this Saturday. The brand’s second temporary shop in the city (the last opened for nine days in January, in addition to a permanent shop since 2002), the pop-up will offer a chance to buy past and current seasons, as well as exclusive designs.

The Old Truman Brewery, Shop 25, Hanbury Street, London. Open 11.00-18.00 Saturday and Sunday, 10.30-19.00 Monday to Friday. Until 10 July.

4. Film: UK/Turkey

-A Separation

A Separation challenges every preconception an audience might have about contemporary Iranian cinema. Asghar Farhadi’s intimate portrayal of a failing marriage brings up issues like female liberation, class equality and religious dissent. After 14 years, Nader and Simin are divorcing. Simin is anxious to take their daughter out of Iran while Nader’s priority is to stay and care for his ageing father. Farhadi’s script breathes life into the complex social landscape of present-day Tehran through universally understood issues of pain and love.

A Separation opens 1 July in the UK and Turkey.

5. Restaurant: Paris

-Singapore, Takeout

The second stop on its nine-city global tour, the Singapore Takeout free mobile pop-up restaurant opened in Paris for just three days on Thursday. Chef André Chiang from Singaporean eatery André collaborates with Sven Chartier of Paris’s Saturne restaurant for a varied menu of modern dishes from the Southeast Asian city-state. Monocle’s picks: Chiang’s jasmine rice squid risotto and Chartier’s Singapore-inspired tomato crab satay. When it was in London it served up to more than 800 people and the next stops after Paris are Moscow, New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Delhi, Dubai and Sydney.

Hippodrome d’Auteuil, 57 Boulevard de Montmorency, Paris.

Sittings on 2 July at 12.00, 14.00 and 19.00.
