FILM: UK

Breathe In

Released this weekend in the UK, Breathe In is US director Drake Doremus’ first film since 2011’s well-received romantic drama, Like Crazy. Keith, a music teacher and substitute cellist for a Manhattan symphony orchestra (played by our favourite Aussie, Guy Pearce) sees his family life shaken to the core by the arrival of an alluring British exchange student played by Felicity Jones. Breathe In is another drama packed with emotional intensity and yet just enough Hollywood flavour added by the gracefully aging Pearce.

Breathe In is now playing at cinemas across the UK.

ART FAIR: SETOUCHI

Setouchi Triennale 2013

How about a holiday browsing the works of over 200 artists while zipping through the tranquil and sparsely populated islands of Japan’s Setouchi region? The Setouchi Triennale takes place in venues across two ports and eight islands such as Naoshima, Shodoshima and Megijima, accessible via ferry from the ports of Takamatsu and Uno. Monocle recommends a visit to Shodojima for works such as Beat Takeshi and Kenji Yanobe’s nightmarish bird-like collaborative statue and the surreal sculptures by Keisuke Yamaguchi on the jetties of Ogijima. Or while you wait for the boat to the next art destination, step into an abandoned building at Uno port for a selection of British musician David Sylvian’s photographic works.

Setouchi Triennale is at venues across the Setouchi region. See website for details. Until 1 September.

EXHIBITION: PARIS

Carnet Photographique

Paris’s Maison Européenne de la Photographie plays host to the first ever exhibition of French filmmaker Costa-Gavras' photographs. The collection of 70 black-and-white images spans from locations such as Palestine, Russia, New York and Latin America. Images of political events – François Mitterrand’s death, street protests in New York— and personal portraits of his family sit alongside those of famous personalities such as Yves Montand and Coline Serreau. The pictures transmit Costa-Gavras’ ability to spontaneously capture both history’s and everyday life’s most enigmatic turning points.

Maison Européenne de la Photographie, 5/7 Rue de Fourcy. Open Saturday and Sunday 11.00-20.00. Until 15 August.

FILM FESTIVAL: CANBERRA

Russian Resurrection 2013

Australians are having their fill of films from the far north, thanks to the annual Russian Resurrection festival. As the 10th edition arrives in Canberra, be sure not to miss Pavel Ruminov’s I’ll Be Around on Saturday at Palace Electric Cinema – a deeply poignant yet uplifting tale of a terminally ill single mother finding a replacement family for her six-year-old son. The film was the winner last year of the Grand Prize at Sochi’s Kinotavr Russian film festival.

Palace Electric Cinema, 2 Phillip Law Street. See website for full schedule. Until 21 July.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: PORTLAND

PDX Pop Now!

Now in its 10th year, PDX Pop Now! is Portland’s summer festival where the DIY spirit extends from the bands playing outdoors in the Eastbank Lot (just a stone’s throw from the Willamette River) to the open band-booking process that lets audiences help pick the line-up each year. Taking to the stage this Saturday is a spread of sounds that range from the Afrobeat of Dusud Mali to the folky melodies of Y La Bamba, both from Portland, and the classic songwriting of revered alt-country act Richmond Fontaine. But this festival is all about showcasing the best of local new talent, so stroll on down and surprise yourself.

Eastbank Lot, SE Water Ave and SE Salmon Street. Open Saturday and Sunday.
